How Amjad got a Finland residence permit for a master's, 10 years after his bachelor's

Mohammad Amzad Hossain from Comilla was admitted to the Master of Business Administration in Sustainable Business Design at Novia University of Applied Sciences in Turku, Finland, with an early bird scholarship that significantly reduced his tuition. He finished his bachelor's in 2016, completed a master's in Bangladesh and worked in the private sector before deciding to study abroad. In 2026 he received his Finland residence permit card.

“You forget all the struggles”

The card is small enough to fit in a wallet. For Amjad, it held ten years.

Ten years since his bachelor's. Years of work at different companies. A master's degree already earned at home. And then a decision most people his age never make: to start again, abroad.

When he finally held his Finland residence permit card, he was asked how it felt.

“When success finally comes, you forget all the struggles you faced.”

He didn't forget the first day, though. When the card reached his hand, the only thing he remembered was the day his journey began.

Why did Amjad decide to study abroad 10 years after his bachelor's?

Amjad decided to study abroad because he believed a strong master's from a good country would have a lasting, positive impact on his career.

He completed his bachelor's in 2016, then a master's in Bangladesh, and went on to work at various private-sector companies. About a year before receiving his residence permit, the idea took hold: a second master's, abroad, would open doors his current degrees could not.

His experience turned out to be an advantage, not a delay. Novia's master's programmes in business require at least two years of work experience after a bachelor's degree.

Why did he choose Finland and Novia University of Applied Sciences?

Amjad chose Finland because he had always preferred Scandinavian countries for higher education, and Finland was his first choice from the start.

He shortlisted a few universities and received offer letters from three of them. He chose Novia because its programme matched his business and accounting background and, in his words, would be very useful for his future career development.

Novia's MBA in Sustainable Business Design is a 90-credit master's taught in English in Turku, available full-time or part-time. It is a university of applied sciences postgraduate degree with a research-and-development approach. Novia operates campuses along the Finnish coast in Vaasa, Turku, Raasepori and Pietarsaari. The hard part

What made Amjad's case difficult?

Amjad's case was difficult in three places.

  1. Returning to study after a long gap

A decade after his bachelor's, his application had to explain clearly why this subject, why now and why Finland.

  2. Sponsor documentation

Amjad names this as the hardest step of his entire journey. For Scandinavian countries, he says, sponsor papers must show direct consistency between the sponsor and the applicant, or the file risks being declined.

  3. Going to India for VFS

Finland has no VFS centre in Bangladesh, so applicants must travel to VFS New Delhi. Many students see this as a barrier and don't even try.

How did Sunrise Study Abroad help Amjad?

Sunrise Study Abroad guided Amjad from his first meeting to his residence permit, in this order:

  1. A roadmap on day one

On his first visit, Founder & CEO Anisuzzaman Kiron gave him a clear guideline on Finland. Amjad says those first-day words still ring in his ears: follow this path, and you too can tell a visa success story.

  2. University shortlist and offers

With his counsellor, he shortlisted universities and received three offer letters before choosing Novia.

  3. Scholarship

Sunrise Study Abroad helped him secure Novia's early bird scholarship. In Novia's published scheme, it is deducted from the first year's tuition fee for students who confirm their study place within two weeks of admission. Amjad says it reduced his tuition significantly.

  4. SOP built around his background

His statement of purpose connected his accounting background to sustainable business and set out a clear vision, which he believes was central to his offer.

  5. Sponsor and funds documentation

The team guided him on asset valuation, how his sponsor would provide sponsorship and how to clarify the source of funds. Whenever they set a deadline for a task, he completed it and submitted it.

  6. India and VFS New Delhi

He travelled to India for his VFS appointment. In his experience, students entering India on the proper double-entry visa category for this purpose face no trouble.

  7. Residence permit

He collected his Finland residence permit card from VFS Global.

“It wasn't smooth by chance. It was made smooth.”

— Mohammad Amzad Hossain

Amjad says he never felt he was working with an outside institution. “It felt like my own family was guiding me.”

What advice does Amjad give on writing an SOP?

Amjad's advice is to choose a programme that matches your background and make your vision clear in your SOP. Professors may not be convinced if you switch to an unrelated subject without explaining why.

He warns against copying another student's SOP and changing the name. He also cautions against leaning on AI:

“AI can never clarify your vision.”

Your SOP must explain, in your own words, what you want, why you are going and what you will do.

Yes. Finland has no VFS centre in Bangladesh, so applicants verify their identity and documents at VFS New Delhi. Amjad says that entering India on the correct visa category for this purpose caused him no trouble.

What is the Novia early bird scholarship?

Yes. It is a 90-credit master's taught in English at Novia's Turku campus, available full-time or part-time.

Can I use AI to write my SOP?
