Scholarships

Which scholarships can Bangladeshi students get in Finland?

Finland has no government scholarship for bachelor's or master's degrees. Scholarships come from each university, mostly as tuition discounts: an early bird discount on the first year, tuition waivers for top master's applicants, and later-year scholarships for good study progress or Finnish language skills.

What kinds of scholarships do Finnish universities give?

  • Early bird discount: a cut in the first year's tuition for accepting and paying fast, such as 10% at Xamk or 30% at the University of Eastern Finland.
  • Tuition waiver on admission: 50% or 100% for excellent master's applicants at the University of Helsinki; the Aalto Excellence Scholarship covers full tuition.
  • Study progress: a discount from year two for completing about 55–60 ECTS a year.
  • Finnish language: extra discounts for passing a Finnish test, at many universities of applied sciences.

Beware of "fully funded Finland" offers. Study in Finland, the official national site, warns that claims of fully funded government scholarships are misleading. A scholarship also does not replace the residence permit's €9,600 living-cost proof. Compare all scholarships for Bangladeshi students.

Residence permit

How do you get a Finland student visa from Bangladesh?

Bangladeshi students apply online in Enter Finland for a residence permit for studies, pay the €600 fee, then prove their identity at VFS Global in New Delhi, because there is no Finnish visa centre in Bangladesh. You need your acceptance letter, proof of tuition payment, €9,600 in your own account and health insurance.

Which documents does the Finland residence permit need?

  • Valid passport and a colour copy of its data page
  • Passport photo taken in the last 6 months
  • Acceptance letter from your Finnish institution
  • Proof that tuition is paid, or of your scholarship
  • 6-month bank statement showing €9,600 in your own account
  • Health insurance certificate that meets Migri's rules
  • Translations and legalisation where needed

Why do Bangladeshi students go to New Delhi?

The Embassy of Finland in New Delhi serves Bangladesh, and residence permit applicants prove their identity by appointment at the Finland Visa Application Centre (VFS Global) in New Delhi. You therefore need a valid Indian visa before your appointment.

An Indian visa delay can cost you an intake. Read how Moksedul kept his offer through two years of Indian visa rejections, and how Sathi reapplied after missing her first start.

Before you apply

What do our Finland counsellors check before you apply?

These are the six things a Sunrise counsellor checks in your free consultation, before you pay any tuition. Each one can stop a Finland application from Bangladesh.

Afroza Khanam Ruma, Finland counsellor at Sunrise Study Abroad

Afroza Khanam Ruma

Finland counsellor at Sunrise Study Abroad, who guided Amjad, Moksedul and Sathi to their Finland residence permits. Go through these six points with her in your free consultation.

  1. Your HSC or Bachelor's result

Sunrise advises HSC GPA 3.50 out of 5.00 for a Bachelor's, or CGPA 2.75 out of 4.00 for a Master's. A study gap is accepted if you explain it.

  2. English score

Most programmes ask for IELTS 6.0, PTE 55 or TOEFL iBT 60; some ask more. We check each programme's minimum.

  3. Work experience for a UAS Master's

A master's at a university of applied sciences needs two years of work after your Bachelor's, with certificates.

  4. €9,600 in your own account

Migri wants a 6-month statement from your own account; private sponsor letters are not accepted, so plan the money early.

  5. Your Indian visa

You must reach VFS New Delhi to prove your identity, so we plan the Indian visa before you pay tuition.

  6. The early bird deadline

Many discounts need you to accept and pay within 7–35 days of the offer, so the tuition money must be ready.

Not sure where you stand? Send your SSC, HSC or Bachelor's results and IELTS score to a counsellor on WhatsApp 01611878274, or book a free consultation at our Banani or Sylhet office.

FAQ

Ask a Finland counsellor directly if your question is not here.

Is studying in Finland free for Bangladeshi students?

No. Students from outside the EU/EEA pay tuition, usually about €9,000–13,500 a year, and Finland has no government scholarship for bachelor's or master's degrees. Many universities lower the first year with an early bird discount, and some waive 50–100% of tuition for top master's applicants.

How much bank balance do I need for a Finland student visa?

Finland's immigration service (Migri) asks for €9,600 in your own bank account when you apply, shown with a 6-month statement, which is about BDT 13.2 lakh at today's rate. If your tuition is not paid yet, the account must also cover the first year's fee.

Can I study in Finland without IELTS?

It depends on the programme. Each English-taught programme lists the tests it accepts on Studyinfo.fi, usually IELTS, TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic. Sunrise advises at least IELTS 6.0, PTE 55 or TOEFL iBT 60 to keep the most options open.

Is a study gap accepted in Finland?

Yes. Finnish institutions accept applicants with a study gap if it is explained clearly. Sunrise students Moksedul (HSC 2021) and Amjad (bachelor's 2016) both got Finland residence permits after a gap, and a UAS master's even requires two years of work experience.

What is the deadline for the 2027 intake in Finland?

For studies starting in autumn 2027, the joint application for English-taught programmes runs from 7 to 21 January 2027 on Studyinfo.fi. Some universities of applied sciences also take rolling applications, such as Xamk from 15 November 2026 to 15 February 2027.

Do I have to go to India for a Finland student visa?

Yes. There is no Finnish visa centre in Bangladesh, so after applying online you prove your identity at VFS Global in New Delhi. You need a valid Indian visa, so plan it before you pay tuition.

How many hours can students work in Finland?

Degree students can work an average of 30 hours a week during the academic year, and full-time in holidays. After graduation you can get a permit to look for work for up to two years.

Can I take my spouse to Finland on a student visa?

Yes. Family members of degree students can apply for a residence permit. The family must show enough money for the first year; in the Helsinki area Migri lists €800 a month for the student and €610 a month for a spouse.
